The CDC found a a dispensing rate of 81.3 opioid prescriptions per 100 persons in the year 2012, with the total number of opioid prescriptions dispensed over 255 million that year. Pharmacists play a key role on the front lines of dispensing opioid medications and can be utilized to better defend against opioid use disorder and overdose.
The Opioid Progression focuses on legal, financial, and professional obligations that pharmacists face during the opioid epidemic and why opioid stewardship should be a critical component of your pharmacy workflow. The progression aims to provide resources and inform pharmacy staff members of Morphine Milligram Equivalents (MME) calculations, naloxone dispensing information, and safe practices for opioid use and disposal. One example of additional resources provided is the Opioid Pledge to share with patients in order to create dialogue and set expectations around filling opioid prescriptions. With pain management, it is important to share your opioid efforts with prescribers and other healthcare team members, and the progression provides information on how to innovate your pharmacy workflow to support that care coordination.
