Making A Difference in the COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout

Going into my first Community rotation in May/June I heard that the site I was going to, Bay Street Pharmacy, was a CPESN pharmacy. At the time I did not have much of an idea of what CPESN nor Flip the Pharmacy (FtP) were about but I was excited and eager to learn more. In June FtP was in Domain 1 of the Opioid Progression. I got to help implement the new Opioid Change Package by utilizing the system to generate a report of patients with a calculated MME of > 50. It was valuable for me to see this progression, as it set the stage for my future experiences.

Fast forward in time and I am completing a 6-week CPESN rotation and I am learning more deeply about CPESN and FtP. I split my time between working with Dr. Rhodes (Florida’s Managing Network Facilitator) and a CPESN Pharmacy, The Prescription Shop of Stuart. Most notably, I now have first-hand experience and knowledge about the COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

Working with the COVID-19 vaccine rollout in two different settings allows me to compare them from an administrative perspective and an implementing pharmacy’s perspective. As a student, I have been able to follow the progression CPESN and FtP has made since the beginning of January. I can appreciate the time and effort that is put in from CPESN and FtP to provide pharmacies with all of the necessary materials to make the COVID-19 vaccine rollout easier.

While in the pharmacy, with the more administrative perspective, I have been able to utilize the COVID-19 Vaccine Change Package, CPESN Billing Guide, and most importantly the COVID-19 Best Practices website to get ready for the vaccine rollout. Amongst the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, pharmacies are working diligently to remain focused on eCare plans and following up on traditional immunizations. I was able to also help the pharmacy by submitting any eCare plans.

In summary, I have gotten experience with CPESN and FtP and it has been a pleasant one. I didn’t have as much of an appreciation for what all CPESN and FtP does up until now. I have seen how they impact the pharmacies to better serve the community and am very thankful for this experience. If your pharmacy is not partnered already with CPESN and FtP, I’d like to encourage you to consider joining the movement and be a member pharmacy that is making a difference in the COVID-19 vaccine rollout.
